A Shining Life

A light is not to look at but to look by. It does not exist to draw attention to itself but to help us to see other things more clearly. It is this basic quality of light that led Jesus to say to his followers of all ages, “You are the light of the world.” What did he mean?

The world is groping in spiritual darkness and cannot find God. It is the purpose and mission of every Christian to help the world see and find God. By word and by our life we are to make God clear to others. Our Christianity is to be open and evident to al. As someone has said, “There can be no such thing as a secret disciple, for either the secrecy destroys the discipleship, or the discipleship destroys the secrecy.” Someone's Christianity should be perfectly visible to everyone.

However, there is the possibility that a person may stifle and smother his light. The light of holy character can be covered by inconsistencies. High steeples and low principles do not fit together. A dirty life will not attract people to a holy God.

We can also hide our light with cowardice and indifference, being afraid to speak for God.

Our life is to have the glow of purity and compassion about it and thus point others to Christ. Let us, therefore, live consistent lives. Let us unashamedly tell about God. Let us live up to our name and mission as “the light of the world.”
