Amazing Universe

Whether you examine it with a telescope or with a microscope, our universe is indeed amazing. Of its minuteness Bible commentator John Phillips once wrote, “If the molecules in one drop of water could be converted into grains of sand, there would be enough sand to build a concrete highway, half a mile wide and one foot thick, from New York to San Francisco.” Of its immensity English physicist Sir James Jeans said, “Put three grains of sand inside a vast cathedral and the cathedral will be more closely packed with sand than space is with stars.” Scientists tell us that wherever they look in our universe they see order, design, and arrangement.

Where did this amazing universe come from? It deserves and demands an explanation. The Bible answers. It says in Genesis 1:1, “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” Walter F. Burk, the scientist who managed the Mercury and Gemini space projects, observed, “The farther we penetrate into space, the more I am confronted with the wisdom and the majesty and the omnipotence of God.” He went on to say, “I know some people are saying that God is dead, but it’s not the scientists who are saying it. Though I have known hundreds of scientists involved in space work, I have never known one who considered himself an atheist. Our faith is strengthened rather than jeopardized by our explorations in space.”

Our universe is an object lesson about God. The Bible says, “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork” (Psalms 19:1). If you examine it closely enough you will be compelled to believe in him.
