Apathy

Sometime ago a survey was conducted asking people which was the greatest problem—ignorance or apathy? Sixty-five percent of the people said, “I don’t know and I don’t care.”

Apathy means “no feeling.” It is the opposite of sympathy, which means to “feel with.” One of the greatest problems we have in our world today is that people just don’t care. That should never be said of Christians.

Anglican bishop George Ingle (1895-1964) said, “Every person should have three conversions. A man needs to be converted to Jesus Christ: 'Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved, and thy house' (Acts 16:31); converted to the church: ‘Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together’ (Hebrews 10:25); and finally converted back to the world: 'Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature’” (Mark 16:15).

It is the responsibility of every Christian to mix in the world and do what he can to bring that world to God. This is ever and always the duty of the people of God. We cannot be indifferent and unconcerned. We must feel for the world and those around us and reach out to meet their needs in any way we can.
