Disappointments

Sigmund Freud, the famous psychiatrist, was hostile toward Christianity. When he was two years old a nursemaid employed by his family made a profound impression on Freud. She took him to church, read the Bible to him, and indoctrinated him in the beliefs of her church. He was so impressed with her that upon returning from church he often pretended that he was a preacher. Unfortunately she was convicted of theft and promptly fired from her job. One psychologist said in reflection on this early event in Freud's life, “I think it is fair to surmise that Freud’s hostility to religion and religious ceremonies goes back to his disappointment with the very one who first introduced him to religion.”

What a tragedy! When people must climb over the bleached bones of Christians who aren’t dedicated and consistent, it is hard for them not to be hostile. Satan and sin erect enough barriers without our help.

Jesus once said, “Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? It is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men” (Matthew 5:13). We must not lose our Christian distinctiveness. We must be sincere, consistent, dedicated Christians, or people shall be so disappointed in us that they become hostile toward the God we worship.
