Faith and Intellect

Faith is an absolute need for modern man. Most people do realize that scientists live by faith. They accept information by faith. No scientist has ever seen an electron or proton, yet we all believe in these atomic particles. We have all the faith in the world in what our trusted textbooks tell us is truth, even though we know that those same textbooks are being constantly modified, revised, and changed according to the most recent scientific activity.

A happy home cannot exist without faith. Husband and wife must believe what they cannot see and cannot prove. Where there is suspicion and jealousy, the home is destroyed. If faith is reasonable in science, education, and the home, it is also reasonable in spiritual matters. There is absolutely no conflict between religious faith and intellectual advance.

You may say, “I can’t believe in God because you can’t tell me where he came from and I can’t believe in anything that has no beginning and no end.” But I would ask you, “Do you believe in outer space? So far as we know it has no beginning and no end. If faith in an endless and eternal space is reasonable, then faith in an eternal God is too.”

Man’s knowledge is limited and as long as he does not know everything there will be plenty of room for faith. If the religious skeptic is wise, he will therefore leave himself plenty of room to retreat.
