Forgive Others

One of the hardest teachings of Jesus is, “Love your enemies, bless them who curse you, do good those who hate you, pray for those who despitefully use and persecute you.”

You say, “I could never do that.” You not only can, you must. If we don’t forgive others who hurt us, God will not forgive us of our sins. As has been said, by refusing to forgive others, we destroy the bridge over which we ourselves must travel. Besides, what we forgive others of compared to what God forgives us of is like comparing a mud puddle to the Atlantic Ocean.

To forgive does not mean you forget the hurt. We can’t do that. It does not mean to pretend it didn’t happen. It did happen. It doesn’t mean that it doesn’t matter. It does matter. To forgive means that we suffer the pain, bear the loss, endure the consequences, and the other person goes free. We don’t try to make them pay.

There’s an old saying: “Doing injury to a person puts you below them; revenging makes you even again; forgiving sets you above them.” You can do it. Let Jesus help.
