God and the Atheist

God’s opinion of the atheist is so clear that even the atheist can understand it. He says, “The fool has said in his heart, there is no God.” (Psalm 14:1) Why does God, in all the Bible, make this one statement on atheism and thereafter dismiss the subject? It’s because the foolishness of atheism is so self-evident that no other comment is necessary.

First, the atheist’s life proves that he is a fool. Leave God out of life and the end result is riot and sin. How could it be otherwise? If a person denies God, he removes all basis for an absolute right and wrong from his life. Without God, right and wrong are determined by what people think, and so ultimately our own pleasures and desires shall prevail. Such living is foolishness.

Second, the atheist’s thoughts prove that he is a fool. The atheist has no answer for the vast mystery of the universe and the existence of humanity. To him, these things just happened. Yet, the vastness, dependability, and the order of the universe and the intelligence and conscience of human beings demand more of an explanation than “by accident.” Only the great intelligence and creative power of God can adequately explain life and the universe. Faith says, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1) The fool says, “They created themselves.”

Third, the atheist’s emotions prove that he is a fool. H. G. Wells was a famous historian who claimed to be an agnostic (one who does not know if there is a God or not). He said, “At times in the silence of the night and in rare, lonely moments, I experience a sort of communion of myself with something great that is not myself.” The atheist is not true to his own feelings. God is there and he knows it, but he will not admit it. To do this is to play the fool.

Don’t live, think, or die like a fool. Believe in God and live for him.
