I once was invited to open the House of Representatives with prayer. Both Houses of Congress have a chaplain and both begin each day with prayer. Strange, isn’t it? We are not supposed to pray in public schools, but Congress opens each session with prayer...and have done so since the nation was founded.
Don’t let anybody tell you our nation was not founded on Judeo-Christian principles (i.e., the Bible). Embossed above the Speaker’s stand in the House Chamber is our national motto, “In God We Trust.” On the back wall of the Senate Chamber is the same motto, “In God We Trust.”
Our national documents, buildings, and monuments are filled with repeated references to God, the Bible, and divine Providence. If our nation was not founded on biblical principles, someone forgot to tell our Founding Fathers and also those who erected monuments in their honor.
In my prayer I prayed that those we have chosen to lead us would be worthy of the trust we and God have placed in them and that we would always look to God, bow before God and humbly follow God. And I offered my prayer “in Jesus' name.”
Our Founding Fathers believed that God brought this nation to being. So do I. How about you?
