Growing Old

A man once asked a lady, “How old are you?”

She retorted, “My age is my business. Why do you ask?”

He replied, “You look like you’ve been in business a long time.”

Truth be told, a lot of us have been in business a long time. According to the World Health Organization, by 2050 the world's population aged 60 and over is expected to total 2 billion! Nearly 125 million people are 80 years of age or older.

Growing old is both a blessing and a challenge. The challenge of scripture is this: “Be thou faithful unto death and I will give you the crown of life.” The risen Christ doesn’t say, “Be faithful until you're tired, or until you’re retired, but until you are expired – unto death.” Let's honor age and challenge ourselves in the words of Browning, “Grow along with me, the best is yet to be . . . the last of life for which the first was made. Our times are in his hands.”

Grow old with the Lord and life will be sweeter and eternity will be better.
