Is Life Worth Living?

Is life worth living? Obviously many people don’t think so by the way they waste it. Some waste their life suddenly by suicide, while others waste their life by degrees through alcohol or narcotics. They feel that life has no aim, no purpose, no meaning.

Life is worth living. It was created by God and, like all things he made, “It was good.” Millions have found a meaningful and worthwhile life through faith in Jesus Christ. He gives those things that make life worth living. What are they?

First, a self you can respect. Sir Wilfred Grenfell, the great missionary doctor to Labrador, said that people often asked him, “Doctor, is life worth living?” To which he always answered, “That depends on the Liver.” People often say they are fed up with life. Most often they are just fed up with themselves. They are ashamed and disappointed in the mess they have made of their lives. They long to be free from the guilt and frustration of their own sin. That’s what Jesus can do. He can forgive and cleanse us from all our sins and give us a self we can respect.

Second, we need a cause to serve. A meaningful life must have a lasting, compelling interest. The people who find life the least enjoyable are those who have never found anything outside themselves to live for. The highest human happiness comes from investing your life in a cause worthy of your best. Jesus said, “He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it” (Matthew 10:39).

Finally, we need a God we can know. We were created by God for fellowship with him. If we are the illegitimate offspring of a thoughtless parent called "order", then life has no significance. But we are not. We are God’s offspring and we find life at its best in fellowship with him.

No other living thing except humans can ever be bored with itself or its surroundings. But wait—boredom is good news. It is proof of our highest heredity. It is a sure sign that our soul has an unquenchable hunger for God. Jesus alone brings us to God.

Jesus came that we might have life and have it more abundantly (John 10:10). Find him and you find a self, a cause, and a God that makes life worth living.
