Life at Its Best

How can your life be better? How can you live life at its best? The answer is simple: Live by God’s rules. Life at its best is a life lived in obedience to God’s laws. The Bible says, “He that keepeth the commandment [of the Lord] keepeth his own soul [life]; but he who despiseth his way shall die” (Proverbs 19:16).

God wants us to enjoy life to the fullest. He wants us to get the most out of life. And God knows how this is best achieved. Thus he has given us certain laws to govern our conduct. Every one of these laws had been given for our benefit. God has never given any law just for a law’s sake. He has never condemned any practice just to keep us from having fun.

Take, for example, the law “Remember the Sabbath Day to keep it holy.” Why did God give such a law? It was for our welfare. Our bodies are like seven-day clocks and need to be wound up. If they are not wound up regularly, they run down. No man can continually ignore the Sabbath Day and keep his physical, mental, and spiritual health. God knew that, so he gave this law for our benefit.

As a train was made to run on a track, so we were made to run on God’s law. A train runs most effectively when it stays on the track. But suppose a certain train did not want to be limited to a small, narrow track. Suppose it should say, “I want more freedom. I want to go places this track won’t let me go and I want to do things this track won’t let me do.” So the train decides to jump the track and go its own way. Would the train thus find the freedom it desired? Of course not. It would immediately bog down and go nowhere. The best thing a train can do is stay on the track. That’s what it was made for and that’s where it operates best.

So it is with you and me. We were made to run on God’s track. When we stay on track, we do our best. When we jump off God’s track, life bogs us down. Has your life bogged you down? Is life less than it ought to be for you? Then somewhere along the way you jumped off God’s track. Get back on it by obedience to God’s law. Make Jesus Christ the engineer of your life and you will find life at its best.
