New Morality and You

There is planted in every person a sense of right and wrong and he is often called on to choose between these two. Today it is increasingly more difficult to make a distinction between them because our standards are sometimes muddled.

In the face of moral decisions, some people say, “I do as I want.” They reject all standards of morality and live only for their own pleasures. Right is what they feel good after, and wrong is what they feel bad after. They desire absolute freedom, but absolute freedom is absolute nonsense.

Anything that is alive must, to remain alive, be tied to something else. A tree is fastened to the earth. If someone “frees” it by pulling its roots from the ground, it is free only to die. Doing as you please is the surest way to death—spiritual, emotional, and physical.

Others say, “It depends,” when faced with the question of right and wrong. They reject any absolute standard and judge each situation on its own. They do not recognize that premarital sex and extramarital sex are absolutely wrong. They say it depends on if you are in love and so on. They admit to no rules in advance. They make up the rules in the heat of the game. We know, of course, that in any athletic contest the rules are established in advance. You do not change the rules in the middle of the game. It is the same with the game of life.

Others, when faced with a moral choice, say, “I always” or “I never.” Their decision is based on an absolute standard. That standard for all should be the Bible—the word of God. It is the right standard because it is the only one that really works. God gave us moral principles to guide us, not because he is a bully who lives to throw his weight around, but because he loves us and knows what will make life best for us.

Don’t drift around in a moral fog. Find out what God says and get in step with him.
