Announcing an earlier Dallas Cowboys football game, Brad Sham said as he analyzed the Cowboys’ mistakes, “If they could just keep from slipping in their own drool (nonsense) they would be a pretty good team.” He had referenced the fact that Cowboys kept making foolish mistakes and penalizing themselves. The end result was a losing season up to that point.
Jimmy Johnson used to say to the Cowboys when he was their coach, “It’s not the good plays that win the game; it’s the bad plays that lose it." In other words, a team can run up and down the field gaining yards, but if they get a penalty, fumble, or throw an interception, they can nullify all their yards gained up until that point.
In life it is the same way. We are often our own worst enemy. The scriptures warn, “Let the man who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall” (I Corinthians 10:12). As you go through life, watch yourself. One mistake can cost you your reputation, influence, family, and everything that really counts in the game of life. Don’t slip in your own nonsense.
