Sad, Lonely, Desperate People

Laura Drummond, who taught at St. Edwards University in Austin, was a police officer on the streets of Austin for nine years to pay her way through school. After graduation she wrote a book entitled, Anything You Say Can and Will Be Used Against You.

In an interview about the book she was asked, “What did you learn from your years as a police officer?” I took note that her first response was, “There are a lot of sad, lonely, desperate people out there.”

There always have been so and there still are. That’s why Jesus invites those who are weighted down by life to come to him for peace and strength (Matthew 11:28-30). The invitation is to come to him, not to the church. To him, not to a creed. To him, not to a preacher. To him, not to a priest. He is the great burden bearer, and he will help you if you turn to him.
