Science and Religion

This is a day of vast scientific advances. Science has created "test tube" babies and we can now transplant almost all bodily organs. In a day of such spectacular achievements many wonder if science has outmoded religion. The answer is no! It never has and it never will. The reason why is because they deal with two different ways of knowing and two different fields of knowledge.

Science deals with observable, verifiable facts about physical and human nature—while religion deals with spiritual truths that are inaccessible to science. What can science say about love? No amount of research in a laboratory can teach you what love is. Love must be experienced. Science focuses on what can be weighed and measured, while religion deals with what can be evaluated. Science has to do with the quantitative, while religion has to do with the qualitative. What can science tell us about God? God cannot be put in a test tube. He cannot be worked out in a mathematical equation. He can be known only by spiritual insight.

Great claims are made for science but not absolute ones. It is one road to truth but not the only one. It does not pretend to tell us all there is to know about life and the world. There can never be a conflict between true science and the Christian faith because God is the author of both. Not only that but trust is the object of both.

Many, many scientists are at the same time devout followers of Jesus Christ. Listen to and learn from science. It has much truth to teach. But don’t forget that there is also a vast unseen world that can be brought into focus only by prayer, faith, and commitment. Listen to God and read the Bible. They too speak the truth.
