The Apple of Your Eye

A news article told of an Oklahoma church that had scheduled its Sunday school on Wednesday because, in the pastor’s words, “We’ve become a city of boat owners: with every new lake more people are spending the weekends out of town.”

This article pointed out the fact that more people are disregarding the third commandment, which says, “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.” They are turning the Holy Day into a holiday. This and all of God’s laws are sacred and should be obeyed.

The Lord says, “Keep my commandments, and live; and my law as the apple of thine eye” (Proverbs 7:2). The “apple of your eye” is the one you desire above all others. It is your pick of the crop. Obedience to God’s commandments should be our supreme desire. God’s commandments are not irksome, burdensome, oppressive, or grievous. To keep God’s word is a joy and a delight.

Keeping God’s commandments leads to real life. Failure to keep them results in spiritual death. Breaking God’s law is sin. All lawlessness is sin. God’s law, like any law, has a penalty attached. A law with no penalty is meaningless. Therefore, God’s laws always carry the death penalty. The Bible says that the wages of sin are death.

Do you want your life to be better, happier, and more meaningful? Then quit breaking God’s laws. Make them the apple of your eye. Keep his commandments and live.
