The Bible and Money

Someone who is right about questions of money is likely to be right on every other question of religion. On the other hand, a man wrong about money is likely to be seriously wrong about every other question of religion.

What is the right use of money? What does the Bible say about the right use of wealth? Look at 1 Timothy 6.

1. We are to enjoy our wealth (v17). This may be a new twist to many of you, but the Bible says that God has given us all things richly to enjoy. It is not wrong to enjoy the fruit of our labor. It is not sinful to reap the benefits of our works.

However, this can happen only if we keep wealth in the right perspective. If it ever makes us proud or becomes more important to us than God, we cease to enjoy it as we should and it becomes a master instead of a servant. So keep a humble and grateful spirit and enjoy what God has given to you.

2. We are to share our wealth (v18). We are to share what we have with other people and thus become rich in good works. Material possessions are never an end within themselves. Money is a commodity much like a brick. You can use a brick to build a house or to beat somebody over the head with. Just so, money can be a blessing or it can be a curse. If we use it as a tool to help other people, we are using it in the right way.

3. We are to invest our wealth (v19). We are creatures not only of time but of eternity. We can use the material things of this world for an eternal investment if we use them to help others. That’s the only real way to keep what we have.

Jay Gould, the railroad financier, lost most of his wealth during the Great Depression. Later he said, “The only thing I have left is that which I have given away.” One day we will all say the same thing.

So use your money wisely. Enjoy it! Share it! Invest it!
