Smiley Blanton, a Christian psychiatrist who helped pioneer better relationships between Christianity and psychiatry, said that one day a patient visited his office and saw a Bible on his desk. She asked, “Do you, a psychiatrist, read the Bible?” He said, “I not only read it, I study it. The Bible is the greatest textbook on human behavior ever put together. If people would absorb its truths, many psychiatrists could close their offices and go fishing.”
All truth is timeless and timely. Truth has no expiration date on it. The multiplication tables are very old, but they are no less true today than they were centuries ago. The law of gravity has been in existence since the creation of the world. However, it is no less true today than it was in the Garden of Eden. Just as mathematical laws and physical laws are timeless, so God’s law is timeless.
The Bible is both old and new. Its truths are as up to date and as relevant as any you shall find. It speaks pointedly and practically to today’s problems. How long has it been since you have read the Bible seriously? Get a modern version, written in everyday English, and begin to study it carefully and prayerfully and you will discover just how up to date it is.
To be well educated and "up on the latest" is to recognize that it is not enough to read Time Magazine or The New York Times. You need to read the timeless and timely book—the Bible.
