I fought a bout with the shingles and lost. Fortunately, it was a mild case perhaps because I had the shingles shot two years ago. I recommend that to you – the shot, not the shingles.
I’ve decided an occasional illness is good for me. I didn’t say I liked it; I just said it was good for me. It helps me in four ways:
Gratitude: It helps to remind me how grateful I ought to be for the usual good health I enjoy. I tend to take that for granted at times.
Sympathy: It helps me to be more sympathetic with others when they are not well.
Perspective: It helps me get life back into perspective. I sometimes lose sight of what is really important.
Humility: It reminds me that I am weak and fragile, and as the scriptures say, “nothing but dust” (Psalm 103:14).
The psalmist wrote, “It is good for me that I have been afflicted; that I might learn thy statutes” (Psalm 119:71). Amen!
