The Heart of Our Problem

Man has always examined his plight and tried to determine what was wrong with him. Karl Marx studied man and concluded that his problem was rooted in economics. He taught that if we would take the money and power away from the capitalist and give it to the working man we could establish the classless society and utopia would come.

Sigmund Freud studied man and concluded that his problems were due to heredity and environment, and if these two could be improved man’s problems would be solved.

John Dewey, who was perhaps the most influential man who lived in the 20th century, said that man’s problem was with his mind. He said that if we would teach man what is right he would do right and proposed that if we’d open the schools we could close the jails.

There is some element of truth in what all of these men taught. However, none really got to the heart of the problem: the human heart. Jesus said, “For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: These are the things which defile a man” (Matthew 15:19-20).

To solve man’s basic problem we must give him a new heart. We must change the seat of his moral, spiritual, and intellectual being. He must be made right on the inside. Only Christ can change the heart of man. Give your heart to Christ and let him control your life. When man is made right on the inside, all our outward problems will vanish, and utopia—the Kingdom of God—will be a reality.
