What God Requires

Someone has well said, “One trouble with the world today is that so many people who stand up vigorously for their rights fall down miserably on their duties.” In Christianity, as in citizenship, there are responsibilities as well as rights. There are duties as well as privileges. In Micah 6:8 the question is asked, “What doth the Lord require of thee?” This is a question of our responsibility to God. What is it? The answer is given in the last part of the same verse. It is, “...to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God.”

God can never be satisfied with ritualism and sacrifices alone. He is a moral God and demands moral action of us. There are many people who are regular, exact, and pious at church on Sunday but are dishonest, ill-tempered, cold, cruel, and proud during the week. If worship does not affect us morally and socially it is not acceptable to God.

Christian people are to be honest, dependable, trustworthy, kind, considerate, humble, and thankful. God demands it of us and we fail him if we are not.

We need a revival of responsibility in America today. Why not let it begin with you?
