The Bible has a great deal to say about money, and most of these teachings are in the form of warnings. The Lord realized that our interest in and weakness for material things would make it a constant danger to us.
Nowhere in the Bible are the rich denounced merely for being rich. But repeatedly we are warned of the difficulty of being both rich and spiritual. In fact the Bible points out that there are times when wealth is definitely wrong. James 5:1-6 is a classic passage on this subject. It tells us of at least three times when wealth is wrong.
1. Wealth is wrong when it is hoarded. To hoard is to collect or lay up greedily. There is a difference in saving and hoarding. Saving is a mark of wisdom. Hoarding is a mark of greed. We should prepare for that “rainy day” in the future but be satisfied when we have enough. Our surplus should be invested in the kingdom of God and the needs of others.
2. Wealth is wrong when it is tainted. Tainted money is gained by crooked or ruthless means. It is possible to take advantage of the poor and ignorant and do them wrong in a business deal. It is possible to work a man or woman for an unfair wage. Such practices may even be legal and still be wrong.
3. Wealth is wrong when it is squandered. There is nothing wrong with living in comfort and convenience. But when wealth is spent on selfish luxury and extravagance while others go in need it is wrong.
We are responsible to God for our wealth. Let us see to it that we gain it, hold it, and use it according to his will. Let us make him the master of our wealth and not make it the master of our lives.
Make your wealth a servant and God your master.
