Years ago a man called our church office wanting me to do the wedding of his daughter. When he found out I was going to be on vacation that week he said, “Why do preachers need a vacation? The devil never takes one.”
I thought to myself, “If I didn’t take a vacation every once in a while I’d be as mean as the devil.”
I am a certified workaholic. As English pastor Charles Spurgeon said of himself, “Doing nothing is hard work for me.” But, there is a rhythm in life between work and rest that we need to discover. If we work all the time we wear ourselves out. If we lay around all the time we rust out.
Jesus, who was often beset by the needs of others, said to his disciples, “Come ye apart and rest awhile.” We either come apart or we fly to pieces. The Lord has set aside at least one day in seven for us to rest. Rest and worship are as important as work for our physical as well as our spiritual wellbeing. Be in church this Sunday—the day of rest.
